I'm pretty much just writing the story as I go with no editing or anything, so y'know. It is what it is. (Also it doesn't really follow the plot of the game at all, cuz that would be kind of pointless in my opinion)

Rhodi had always loved Pokémon, but she didn't have much interest in becoming a trainer. Both of her parents were licensed breeders, so she was much more fond of taking care of Pokémon than battling with them. All her life she played with them, fed them, and did her best to help find good homes for them. When her parents eventually sold their farm and moved to a smaller town, she began to volunteer a few days a week at the local shelter for Pokémon that had been released by their trainers.
Because it was in such a small town, this particular shelter did not contain many Pokémon, but this allowed Rhodi to get to know each individual animal rather well. The one she became closest to was Gilligan, a Turtwig that had been given to someone as a starter Pokémon. It had been left behind once the trainer had captured other Pokémon to use. His nickname had been given to him by Rhodi, for she named all the Pokémon at the shelter.
Often the girl made rounds, visiting the indoor pens of each Pokémon for as long as she was able. Sometimes, when the weather was good, she and the staff took all of the Pokémon outside to run around and play in the well-kept yard of the shelter, though a close eye had to be kept on them to make sure they didn't get lost. There was a small stretch of woods just beyond the shelter's property.
It was on one of these warm, sunny spring days that Rhodi was unexpectedly approached by the director of the shelter. She was a tall woman with short, somewhat faded brown hair. Since the older woman was very busy, her and Rhodi had only spoken a few times before.
"Good afternoon, Rhodi." The director said. "I see you're taking advantage of the good weather.
"Yes, ma'am. I thought all that snow would never melt, but I'm thankful that at least we haven't got much rain." the younger girl answered. The director smiled as Rhodi bent down to pet Gilligan's shell.
"I'm very grateful for all the work you do around here, Rhodi. All of the staff are, and the Pokémon too."
"It's no big deal, really! I enjoy it a lot." It was then that the girl turned around and saw that the older woman was holding something in her arms.
"Oh!" Rhodi exclaimed. "Is that a Pokémon egg?"
"Indeed it is!" the director answered, beaming down at her. But after a moment her smile slipped away. "Well, actually... I was wondering if I might ask you a favour regarding this egg."
Rhodi was nearly knocked off her feet as Gilligan shoved his way between her legs to peer up at the Pokémon egg curiously. She stepped off to the side a bit to let herself stand more safely.
"Well, my parents are the ones who usually handle that kind of thing, but I'll do my best whatever it is." the girl answered.
"You don't need to commit yourself right away. I was actually wondering if you could deliver it to a friend of mine." the director replied. "This friend of mine lives in Oreburgh City, but you could take Gilligan with you if you wanted. I know you don't own any Pokémon, but we can't have you wandering around on your own."
"Hmm... I don't think that would be a good idea. He might get hurt. I'd much rather go on my own." Rhodi said thoughtfully. Gilligan turned himself around and started to headbutt Rhodi's legs.
"You see? He wants to go with you!" the director exclaimed. "I don't think he wants to be apart from you. I'm sorry to ask you this at all, but eggs can't be transferred through the PC like Pokéballs can. The employees here don't make much money, so none of them can take time off..."
"It's alright, director. I'll go, and if Gilligan really wants to come along that badly I will take him with me. I'll just stop by the house and let my mother know, and I'll leave this afternoon."
"Oh, Rhodi. Thank you so much! And please, I told you before you can just call me Jade." The older woman sighed with relief, handing Rhodi the large blue egg.
The two discussed the details of the delivery for a moment longer, but soon the director had to return to her office. When the discussion was over another young woman came running over to speak with Rhodi. This woman was one of the shelter's staff, a young Pokémon doctor with long black hair and glasses. She had a black bird Pokemon flying close behind her.
"Oh, Rhodi!" the girl squeaked. "Jade told me this morning, I'm not at all surprised that you agreed!"
"You know me pretty well, Rosemary. I guess you would have known I wouldn't refuse."
Rosemary's Murkrow squawked loudly and perched itself roughly on top of her head, knocking her glasses loose as her head jerked from the sudden added weight.
"Ouch, Kier! I keep telling you, you're too big for that! And your claws are huge!" Rosemary scolded. The Pokémon simply gave another self-appreciating squawk and flapped its wings.
"Listen, Rhodi. I was thinking maybe you should take Kier with you too. I mean, Gilligan's not really used to fighting."
"You're just saying that because you want a couple days free of getting your head sat on." Rhodi accused slily.
"That's not true! I just - ouch! - think it would be safer. Besides, he likes you better than me. He was born on your parents' farm, you helped raise him. You even gave him his name!" Rosemary explained.
Before she could reply, the bird hopped away from Rosemary and rested itself on Rhodi's shoulder, giving the side of her head a small peck. She lifted a hand and waved him off. He flew down to stand beside Gilligan, who began to walk in circles around him. The bird hopped around in the middle to follow the turtle Pokémon's movements.
"Alright, I'll take Kier as well. Thanks, Rosemary." Rhodi said, giving her friend a smile and a small hug.
"No problem, Rhodi. I'll work extra hard to keep all the Pokémon happy while you're away! We're all going to miss you!"
"Don't worry." Rhodi answered. "I'll be back in just a few days."
She smiled at her friend, but as she repeated the words in her mind, something strange came over her. She wasn't sure why, but something in her mind was telling her that this small favour was going to turn out to be much more than she bargained for.
